ABOUT ME

FINE ART WORK

UNDER THE MASC • an exploration of masculinities and identities

"Under the Masc" explores my earliest memories of masculinity. When I made these photographs, I was thinking about a childhood memory I have of walking into a friend’s garage to find his father skinning and gutting a deer he had killed. Growing up in rural Pennsylvania, I came to associate men with animal death in this way, but grew to understand the necessity of the practice for the community, and to recognize what a privilege it is to never have to dirty one’s hands with the blood of one's own food.

For these photographs, I projected images of butchered cattle and mass-caught fish onto the bodies of men. These images are my memories projected onto other people, just as we all project our perceptions onto others.  These images are products of the male gaze and do not constitute a defense of men.

Shot on a Maymiya RZ67, self-developed and scanned.
